As our bodies age, we need to keep in mind the specific needs that our bodies require. Preparing food rather than buying processed food or fast food has significant benefits. Here are a few tips that will help you navigate your local grocery store and target the food that will sustain your system.

  • Think in terms of general categories - fruits, vegetables, beans, nuts, legumes, protein and carbohydrates such as bread and potatoes

  • Watch for added sugars and salt – Although canned fruit and vegetables are easily stored they can contain hidden sugars and excess amounts of salt. As a rule of thumb, try and look for items that advertise “reduced” or “low” salt/sodium.

  • Buy fresh – fruits and vegetables are important sources of the nutrients our bodies require for optimal operation. Buying fresh will allow you to get the most out of your foods without running the risk of adding preservatives into your system.
