Get Up and Get Moving

November is National Diabetes month and we want to share how important it is that you get out off the couch and exercise.

“Exercise is by far the most important healthy lifestyle choice we can make and the very best medicine”, says Citrus Valley’s Clinical Nurse Specialist and Certified Diabetes Educator Ann Kuns, MSN, RN, CNS, CDE.

What are the benefits you ask?

  • 30 minutes of cardiovascular activity per day at least 5 days per week (or 60 minutes on 3 days per week) will reduce your insulin resistance by at least 30%. Meaning your natural insulin works 30% better resulting in helping lower your blood sugar.
    • Note - people with diabetes should have a small meal or snack before exercising.
  • Lowers inflammation in your blood vessels making you less likely to have a heart attack or stroke
  • Helps most people raise their HDL cholesterol ( HDL helps to keep your blood vessels healthier)
  • Promotes blood supply to your brain so you can think better
  • Improves your mood
  • Lowers your stress level
  • Improves your lean muscle mass

As Ann says, “You have to be the captain of your ‘health’ ship.” We encourage all of you during the national Diabetes month to find new ways to incorporate exercise in to your daily life.
